Overview
Data Localization enables end users to view chart data in their preferred language. Administrators configure Data Localization by mapping a base field to its translated equivalents. For example, the field Title can be mapped to Title_FR (French) and Title_DE (German). When an end user switches their language preference, OrgChart automatically displays the translated field values — no additional box styles are needed.
As long as the fields are mapped to their translated counterparts, the chart automatically displays those field values based on each user's language preference.

- Managing localization mappings
- Setting a language preference as an end user
Preparing your data for localization
Before configuring Data Localization, your data source must contain a separate field for each language you want to support. Each field should hold the translated values for the same data point. OrgChart does not translate data automatically — the translated values must exist in your data.
For example, if you want to support English, French, and German job titles, your data should contain three separate fields, such as:
- Title_EN — English title values (e.g., "Vice President of Sales")
- Title_FR — French title values (e.g., "Vice-Président des Ventes")
- Title_DE — German title values (e.g., "Vizepräsident Vertrieb")
Repeat this pattern for every field you intend to localize (e.g., department names, location names). Fields that do not require translation do not need language-specific equivalents.
Configuring Data Localization
Once your data is prepared, an administrator can configure the data localization for that chart in the Chart Settings: Mapping page. The following section provides step-by-step instructions.
1. Click on the Settings button in the bottom left corner, and then click on the Chart settings option.
2. Click on the Mapping option, and then scroll to Data localization section.
3. Click on the Add Language button, and then select each language you want to support from the dropdown. The following languages are available:
- English
- Spanish
- French
- German
Repeat this step until all desired languages have been added. Each selected language will appear as a column in the localization table.
Note
You only need to choose languages that are in addition to your base language. For example, if you'd like your base language to be English, you will only need to add French and German columns.
4. Click on the Add Field button, and then select the base field you want to localize from the dropdown (e.g., Title). The base field will be the field you add to box styles, so that it's translated in each language.
5. The field is added as a new row in the localization table. For each language column in that row, click on the field dropdown and select the corresponding translated field from your data (e.g., select Title_FR under the French column, and Title_DE under the German column).
6. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each additional field you want to localize (e.g., Department_EN, Location_EN).
7. Click on Save, and then Refresh.
8. Add your base fields to box styles and profiles. The field values will display depending on the end user's preferred language.
Managing localization mappings
After mappings are configured, you can modify them at any time from the Data localization section of the Chart settings: Mapping page.
The following actions are available within the localization table:
-
Search for a mapping — Use the search bar in the top right of the localization table to quickly find a specific field within a large list of mapped fields.
-
Delete a field row — Hover over a field name in the table to reveal the trash icon, and then click it to remove that field's mapping.
- Delete a language column — Hover over a language column header to reveal the trash icon, and then click it to remove that language and all of its associated field mappings.
Setting a language preference as an end user
End users can set their language preference at any time. Once set, all localized chart fields update automatically to reflect the selected language — no manual refresh is required.
1. Click on the initialed avatar in the top right corner of the application, and then click on Preferences.
2. Under the Language header, select the desired language. Then, click on Update.
3. Refresh the browser. The chart values are updated.
