Overview
Position-driven charts allow you to visualize the positional hierarchy of your organization with employees that hold those positions. OrgChart allows you to create position-driven charts whether your HR system has a native position structure, or not.
This article provides information on:
- Creating position-driven charts from positional HR data (organic position charts)
- Creating position-driven charts from employee HR data (synthesized position charts)
Creating organic position charts
OrgChart can pull positional data from HR systems to generate position-driven charts. Position-driven charts created using natively position-driven HR systems are called organic position charts.
The following section provides information:
Note
If OrgChart does not directly connect to your HR system to pull positional data, you can export positional data from your HR system to Excel or CSV. Ensure that you have one file containing positions and one file containing employees. Reference the Formatting position-driven flat files article for more information.
Creating an organic position base chart
1. Click on the Settings button in the bottom right corner, and then select the Account Settings option from the list.

2. Click on the Base charts tab, and then click on + Create base chart.

3. The Create base chart modal is displayed. Enter a name for the base chart (i.e 'Position Chart').

4. Click on the Position Chart card.

5. Select the "I have multiple sources with employee and position data" option.

6. Click on the Choose data source button under the Employee dataset heading. Then, select the data source from which you would like to pull employee data (i.e Excel).

7. Click on Choose file.

8. The file manager is displayed. Navigate to the Data folder, and then upload your employee data. Once the file is uploaded, ensure it is selected, and then click on the Select button.

9. Click on Save.

10. Click on the Choose data source button under the Position dataset heading. Repeat steps 5 - 9 for the position data file.
11. Click on Create.

12. The position chart has been created. Click on Load now to start loading your mapping. For more information, reference the Mapping fields for an organic position chart section below

Mapping fields for an organic position chart
Field mapping is how OrgChart understands your data. In position-driven charts, OrgChart needs to know if a field should be associated with a position, or with an employee.
The following section provides information about mapping employee and position fields for position charts created from natively position-driven HR data.
1. After clicking on the Load mapping button, the Mapping page is displayed. If you chose to not to load mapping, click on the Mapping tab, and then click on the Load mapping button.
OrgChart will attempt to map your data. If OrgChart does not select the correct field, click on the corresponding dropdown menu, and click on the correct field name.
Note
Once a field is mapped to an employee, it cannot be mapped to a position and vice versa. If OrgChart automatically mapped a field incorrectly, you can click on the Edit button, and then manually enter the name of the field, or remove an incorrectly mapped field by selecting a different one from the field dropdown.
2. Map the following required fields under the Employee fields section:
- EmployeeID - Field containing the unique identifier for each employee
- Employee PositionID - Field containing each employee's position ID
Then, if desired, map the following optional fields:
- Employee location - Field associated with an employee's location

3. Map the following required fields under the Position fields section:
- PositionID - Field containing the unique identifiers for each position
- Parent PositionID - Field containing the position IDs that each position reports to
- Position title - Field containing each position's title
Then, if desired, map the following optional fields:
- Position division
- Position location
- Staffing target - Field associated with the ideal number of holders (employees ) per position. If you do not have this field, select the system generate for me option and it will be generated for you. Reference the Staffing target article for more information.

4. Optionally, under the Employee details field mapping section, continue to map additional fields that should be associated with employee records.

5. Optionally, under the Budget field mapping section, map any fields that should be associated with an employee or position's budget.

6. Optionally, enable cost band data. Read the Mapping budget and compensation fields article to learn more about mapping cost band data.
7. Click on Save and then Refresh.
Creating synthetic position charts from employee HR data
OrgChart can generate positional data from HR systems that do not natively support position management (position-based hierarchies). Position-driven charts generated from employee data are called synthetic position charts.
The following section provides information on:
Creating a synthetic position base chart

5. Click on the "I have a single source with employee data" option.

6. Click on the Choose data source button. Then, select the data source from which you would like to pull employee data (i.e Excel).

7. Upload your file to the file manager, or click on the Samples folder, and then select a sample dataset.

8. Click on Save.

9. Click on Create.

10. The position chart has been created. Click on Load now to start loading your mapping. For more information, reference the Mapping fields for a synthetic position chart section below.

Then, if desired, map the following optional fields:
- Employee location - Field associated with an employee's location

7. Under the Data field categories section, confirm that each field in your dataset is bucketed to the correct data object (employee or position). While OrgChart buckets these fields for you automatically, you can click and drag selected fields to the correct bucket, or use the Position or Employee buttons to assign the selected field(s) to a different data object.
Note
Fields that are grayed out cannot be moved, since they are already mapped to a position- or employee-specific field in the sections above. If you wish to change how grayed out fields are bucketed, first you will need to update the mapping.
